How to Choose the Best Hair Topper for Thinning Hair After 60

If you’ve noticed your hair getting thinner on top, please know this; you are so not alone. My hairdresser used to say I had fine hair, but a lot of it. No more! I’ve always figured a wig was in my future, and I wasn’t looking forward to it. The few times I’ve worn a wig, I’ve found them hot and uncomfortable. That’s why I was so excited when I started seeing hair toppers in my feed.
What Exactly Is a Hair Topper?
Think of a hair topper as a little boost for the top of your head. It clips into your natural hair and adds fullness right where you need it. It’s not a full wig, but more of a “hair piece.
There are toppers for small thinning areas, toppers for wider parts, and toppers that cover the whole crown. You get to choose the amount of coverage that feels right for you.
When Should You Consider a Hair Topper?
You may be a great fit for a topper if you notice:
- Thinning around your part
- A wider part line than you used to have
- A flat or thinning crown
- Small bare spots
- Early stages of medical hair loss
- If you still have some hair on top for the clips to hold onto, you’re good to go.
My Review of A Hair Topper
I decided to give hair toppers a try. I didn’t want to spend a ton of money, and I wanted an easy return, so I went with one from Amazon. It was on sale for around $70 dollars and was made from real human hair, a big plus.
The biggest issue was finding a color that matched well. Spoiler alert, it didn’t. (But if you find one you like, you can take it to your hairdresser and have it colored to match your hair.)

Here’s what I liked, and what I didn’t.
Pros: It was super easy to use, lightweight, and felt good. It gave me more volume, and even though it was way off in color, my mother had a hard time telling that I was wearing it.
Cons: It sat up a little off my skull. I think I could have clipped it tighter and mixed it with my real hair so that it would have looked more natural if I’d spent more time on it. And if the color wasn’t WAY off.
Review: I will definitely get a hair topper the second my scalp starts to show. I might get one now if I can find a good match at a fair price.
How To Choose the Right Topper (Without Stressing About It)
Let’s make this simple.
1. Measure the Spot You Want to Cover
It doesn’t have to be perfect. Just measure the area that feels thin and add a half inch around it. That gives the clips something healthy to hold onto.
2. Human Hair or Synthetic?
Here’s the quick breakdown:
Human hair: Most natural, can be curled or straightened, lasts longer. It can also be dyed.
Synthetic: Keeps its style, affordable, super easy to maintain.
You can’t go wrong. Just choose what fits your comfort and budget.
3. Pick the Base Type
You’ll see words like “mono-top” or “lace.” Here’s what that means:
Mono-top: Very natural, lets you part the hair however you like.
Lace: Breathable and lightweight.
Wefted: Budget-friendly and great for first-timers.
4. Match Your Hair Color
Most brands have beautiful gray blends that look incredibly natural. When in doubt, go a touch lighter.
Brands Worth Checking Out
Here are a few trusted names, especially for beginners:
Raquel Welch – lightweight and stylish.
Gabor – comfortable and natural-looking synthetic options.
Thinning hair can shake your confidence, but you don’t have to just “put up with it.” A topper can give you back that lift, that fullness, and that little spark you may have been missing lately.
If you’ve been feeling unsure or self-conscious, please know you deserve to feel good about yourself every single day. Trying a hair topper might be the gentle, confidence-boosting step you’ve been looking for!
What do you think? Will you be trying one?

This was very informative. Thanks for explaining so much. I love the idea of a topper!
It’s a really good option!
This article gave a lot of good information. I’ve been thinking of getting a topper for a while but couldn’t decide on what type. Thanks for the good tips!!
You’re welcome!
Due to some hereditary balding pattern plus having had a couple of scalp skin cancers (Mohs surgery) removed, I bought a topper a couple of weeks ago. I have an appointment with my hairdresser next week for color touch up and will have her cut and style to totally blend with my hair. My biggest concern is actually seeing where the topper meets my hair line. I’m hoping my hairdresser will help me even this out. Thanks for this article, thinning hair is real!! 😞
It is! I’d love to know how yours looks after the hairdresser colors it!
😀these look great!
I’m encouraged!
I think the topper looked nice for you. Keep trying. I have considered one for some time. I just haven’t pulled the trigger.
