This “Fashion Rule” Is Guaranteed to Make You Look More Polished

When we hit 60 and beyond, there is this weird transitional space in fashion. We don’t want to look like we’re trying too hard to dress like our daughters, but we certainly aren’t ready for the “elastic waistband and shapeless tunic” phase of life. We want to look pulled together, polished, and like we actually meant to get dressed today.

If you’ve been following along, you know how much we loved the “No Frump” post. Seeing how a simple front-tuck can change your entire silhouette is a game-changer! But today, I want to give you the most powerful tool in my styling toolkit. It’s called the Third Piece Rule.

If you feel like your outfits are missing that “spark,” this is the answer. It’s the difference between wearing clothes and having style.

What Exactly is the Third Piece Rule?

The concept is incredibly simple, which is why it works so well. Most of us dress in two pieces: a top and a bottom.

  1. Piece One: Your top (Tee, blouse, sweater).
  2. Piece Two: Your bottom (Jeans, trousers, skirt).

That’s a functional outfit. It gets you out the door. But the Third Piece is the extra layer that ties the top and bottom together. It’s the element that adds texture, color, and structure. It signals to the world (and yourself!) that you put some thought into your look.

Think of it like a room in your house. The “top and bottom” are the sofa and the coffee table. They are necessary. But the “Third Piece” is the throw pillow or the area rug that makes the room feel cozy and complete.

Here’s our starting point, thanks to “Roberta, Louise, and Margaret”.

Why This Rule is a “Frump-Killer” for Petites

For those of us on the petite side (hello from 5’4″!), the Third Piece is particularly magical. A well-chosen third layer can create a “column of color” or add vertical lines that make us look taller and leaner. It draws the eye up and down rather than side-to-side, which is exactly what we want to avoid that “boxy” feeling.

The Three Styles of Third Pieces (And Where to Find Them)

To make this easy, I’ve broken the Third Piece down into three categories. You probably have some of these in your closet right now, but if you’re looking to refresh your wardrobe, these are the “hero” items worth investing in.

1. The Structured Hero: Blazers and Utility Jackets

If you want to feel instant “Boss Lady” energy, even if you’re just headed to a lunch date, a structured layer is your best friend. The structure in the shoulders helps define your frame, which is great if you feel like your shape is softening a bit as the years go by.

The Linen-Blend Blazer: Perfect for those of us in warmer climates (or those of us still dealing with those internal “personal summers”). It’s light, breathable, and looks intentional.

Utility Jacket as 3rd Piece

The Utility Jacket: This is the go-to for “Sporty-Chic.” It’s a bit more rugged than a blazer but way more stylish than a hoodie. Look for one with a drawstring waist so you can cinch it in and show off that you actually have a waistline!

2. The Soft Finisher: Cardigans and Kimonos

Sometimes a blazer feels too “stiff” for a casual day at home or a trip to the grocery store. This is where the soft finisher comes in. The key here is to avoid the “Grandma Cardigan”, you know the one, the shapeless, pilled knit that hangs off the shoulders. We want drape and intentionality.

Starting point – Jeans and a a basic white tee.
Floral Kimono

The Printed Kimono: If you’re wearing a plain white tee and jeans, throwing on a lightweight, printed kimono is the easiest way to add a pop of personality. It’s “Casual Chic” with a bohemian twist.

The Longline Duster

The Longline Duster: For my petite friends, a duster that hits just above the knee creates a beautiful long line. Wear it over a column of color (like a navy tank and navy trousers) for a look that screams sophistication.

3. The Accessory Power Move: Statement Wraps and Vests

A “piece” doesn’t always have to have sleeves! Sometimes, the best third piece is the one that adds interest without the bulk.

The Oversized Wrap or Poncho: Think of this as a wearable blanket that is socially acceptable. It’s perfect for travel or chilly movie theaters.

Vest as a 3rd Piece Layer

The Quilted Vest: This is a staple for the “Modern Mountain” look. It keeps your core warm but keeps your arms free, perfect for a morning of errands or a walk in the woods.

The “Before and After” Challenge

Try this tomorrow. Pick out your standard “uniform”, maybe it’s those favorite joggers and a long-sleeve tee. Take a photo in the mirror. That’s your “Before.”

Now, add your Third Piece.

  • Pop on a denim jacket.
  • Push up the sleeves
  • Add a cute sneaker.

Take another photo. Do you see the difference? You didn’t change your outfit; you styled it. You look like the vibrant, active woman you are, rather than someone who just forgot to change out of her pajamas.

The Style Gene or Something Else?

I know there are women out there who think they just don’t have the “style gene”. I’m here to tell you that’s total nonsense. Style is just a series of small, repeatable formulas. The front-tuck is a formula. The Third Piece Rule is a formula.

When you start using these “recipes” for your outfits, getting dressed stops being a chore and starts being a fun way to express yourself! You deserve to look in the mirror and love what you see very single day.

I too had never heard of chocolate gravy but it sounds like the best kind of gravy
    Thank you for sharing

  2. I agree, it’s already too warm for a third piece. I don’t often wear a solid color tee that you can throw on a kimono over. I have a couple of shorter sleeve, lightweight cardigans that I wear. Other than that, it’s a 2-piece outfit for me with jewelry to finish it off.

    1. A cute two piece outfit with jewelry sounds perfect. A third piece is helpful when your outfit feels too basic. 😊 I’m excited for warm weather here!

  3. Lisa, Thanks for these suggestions. I have had chocolate gravy before my Mom used to make it all the time when I was younger. My sister kept the recipe when my mom passed away. I loved it. Have a great week.

    1. It’s so good! My mom made it on special mornings and I’ve passed that down to mine. I hope your week is good, too!

    1. Yes! Tie a small one at your neck with a crisp button down and you’re perfect! Use a larger one as a wrap. 🙂

  4. I love all these suggestions and really like your models. They help so much. However, where I live it’s already too hot to wear a third piece. What do you add in hot weather for a third piece or to look more polished?

  5. All these pieces look great on the models! The only one I don’t care for is the oversized wrap, the cream with black trim, on the small model. It kind of overwhelms her figure. Sorry the festival didn’t work out for you.

  6. Hey Lisa, your chocolate gravy looks good. I’ve heard of it, but never tried it. I like the floral kamona.

  7. Not sure how I have lived 52 yrs without hearing about chocolate gravy over biscuits! Definitely gonna try that! I love a short sleeve sweater been my go to lately! The AI models are genius! Love your blog you are hilarious!

    1. Haha. Thank you, Tamatha! Give that gravy a try. We even have it on breakfast menus in the local restaurants. 🙂
