How to Stay Cool Without Showing Too Much

Summer is just around the corner, and temperatures are already beginning to rise. If you’ve ever thought about hiding in the AC until October, you’re not alone. And if you’ve ever asked yourself, “Can I stay cool without feeling like I’m showing too much?“, the answer is yes. The secret isn’t about wearing less. It’s about choosing the right fabrics, the right fit, and what feels comfortable to you. To show you how this works in real life, I asked three of our AI favorites, Roberta, Louise, and Margaret, to model simple summer outfits that feel good and look put together.

When You Want Light and Easy (Roberta)

If you don’t mind showing a little leg and want something that feels breezy, a skort can be a great option. Not because you should wear one, but because it’s simple, practical, and easy to move in. The built-in shorts give you coverage where it matters, while still letting air circulate. That’s what makes it so comfortable on hot days.

What to look for:

  • A clean, simple shape (skip anything overly ruffled or busy)
  • A slightly structured fabric so it doesn’t cling
  • A length that feels comfortable to you

This works especially well on smaller frames so that it doesn’t overwhelm you, but truly, it’s about preference, not size.

When You Want Coverage but Still Feel Cool (Louise)

If you like a little more coverage through the thigh, Bermuda shorts are one of the most wearable options out there. Louise shows just how flattering they can be.

They give you:

  • Coverage without feeling heavy
  • A smooth, clean line
  • A look that feels modern but not trendy

What makes them work:

  • A straight or slightly relaxed leg
  • A mid-to-high rise for a smoother fit
  • Breathable fabrics like cotton, linen blends, or Tencel

If you’ve ever said, “I don’t wear shorts anymore,” this is usually the style that changes your mind.

When Comfort Is the Priority (Margaret)

Here’s something I want you to remember: You do not have to wear less clothing to stay cool. In fact, many women feel more comfortable, and cooler, in lightweight pieces that offer a bit more coverage.

Margaret is a great example of this. Instead of forcing a trend, she’s wearing pieces that move with her and feel good all day.

Think:

  • Pull-on shorts
  • Lightweight crops
  • Linen or gauze pants
  • Soft, breathable athleisure

What to prioritize:

  • Nothing tight across the stomach or hips
  • Fabrics that don’t cling
  • Pieces that allow airflow and movement

Comfort is what makes an outfit look good. You can see it immediately.

The One Thing That Matters Most

Summer style isn’t about dressing for your size. It’s about dressing for your comfort level. Some women love skorts, while others live in Bermudas. Some prefer loose, breathable pants all season long.
All of those choices are right! The goal is simple:

  • Stay cool
  • Feel comfortable
  • Still look like yourself

And when you get that right, everything else falls into place.

  1. I’m loving linen pants for staying cool this summer—they’re a bit of a new style for me! I’m curious what tops you all are pairing with them (other than basic tees) to keep the look fresh for our age. The cropped tops shown with them just don’t quite work for me 🙂

    1. That’s a great question! It’s about balance because the pants are usually a bit loose and flowy, you want a more structured item on top. I like a good linen camp shirt like this: https://go.shopmy.us/p-50366598 or a matching long sleeve linen top with a tank underneath. I do tend to wear the basic tee in the same color as the pants, then top it with a kimono, too. Maybe I’ll do a post on Friday on the subject!

  2. Skorts and dresses are my go-tos all summer long. I just got back from very warm Las Vegas and these wardrobe pieces were essential.

  3. You crack me up with the “doing Morgan Wallen’s taxes” comment!! You always look great, even with lanyard and sensible shoes. Ha.

  4. Lisa! Its usually dresses for me. One and done!
I really love your blog!!! Happy Wednesday❤❤❤

  5. I personally love skorts. Are they considered outdated now? Also, is there any pantyhose brands that you would recommend when dressing for church that do not look like support hose and that will at least last for more than one wear? Living in NY, we don’t get much of an opportunity to tan legs!😁
