Clothes That Do a Little More Work for You

As we hit our 60s (and beyond,) our relationship with our wardrobes tends to change. We start prioritizing comfort, ease of movement, and, when we can find them, pieces that make us feel confident the moment we pull them on.
But why settle for just “comfortable” when your clothes can actually do some of the heavy lifting for you? “Workhorse” clothing, pieces designed with hidden support, strategic seams, and specialized fabrics, can help you feel more secure and polished without the struggle of traditional shapewear.
Here is how to build a wardrobe for Living Well that works as hard as you do.

- The “Sport-Chic” Shift: How to Master 2026’s Most Expensive-Looking Trend
1. The Power of “Sculpting” Denim
Modern denim has come a long way from the stiff, heavy fabrics of the past. Brands like Spanx and NYDJ (Not Your Daughter’s Jeans) have pioneered “Lift Tuck” and “360-degree” technologies. These jeans feature hidden interior panels that gently smooth the midsection and strategic pocket placement to provide a natural lift.
What to look for: A “high-rise” cut. This sits at your natural waist, preventing the dreaded “muffin top” and providing a much smoother line under your tops.
2. Sculpting Help in Your Trousers
If you prefer trousers over jeans for a lunch date or a volunteer meeting, look for brands that incorporate “Ab-solution” or “sculpting” technology. These pants often feature a hidden elastic waistband (the kind that doesn’t look like an elastic waistband) and mesh panels inside the front pockets to keep everything flat and secure.
What to look for: Pants with lifting or sculpting panels. and stretch-ponte fabrics. They are thick enough to hide any skin texture but stretchy enough for all-day movement.
3. Support Without the Squeeze: Compression Leggings
For casual days or morning walks, a high-quality compression legging can act like a second skin. Unlike thin leggings that show every bump, compression leggings use a higher percentage of spandex to support your muscles and smooth your silhouette. Plus, wearing leggings with blazers is a current trend!
4. Structured Toppers
Sometimes the “work” isn’t about tucking in, it’s about creating a new shape. A structured blazer or a “lady jacket” with slight shoulder padding can instantly balance out a fuller midsection by drawing the eye upward and creating a more defined frame.
What to look for: A blazer with a single-button closure at the narrowest part of your waist to create an hourglass effect.
Pro-Tips for a Better Fit
Check the Fabric: Aim for a blend that has 2–4% Spandex or Elastane. Anything more can feel restrictive; anything less won’t hold its shape by the end of the day.
The “V” Factor: On the back of your jeans, look for a V-shaped seam (the yoke). A deep “V” shape creates the most flattering, lifted look for your backside.
Living well means feeling your best in the skin you’re in. While we should never feel like we have to “hide,” there is a special kind of confidence that comes from wearing clothes that support us, literally and figuratively. By choosing pieces that offer a little extra structure and thoughtful design, you can spend less time adjusting your outfit and more time enjoying your day!

Thank you for your blog. I’m enjoying it!
Blessings
Thank YOU, Alice! I appreciate you being here. 🙂
I am really enjoying your blog. You and your sister have great talents. I am currently doing Weight Watchers through the app and it’s working well for me, I do, by default, eat a more Mediterranean diet because it the kind of food I love. I’m holding off on new jeans until I hit my goal or the current ones fall off of me😃
Thank you! I did Weight Watchers years ago and got so thin people thought I was sick, lol. I thought I was a WW genius, then I realized I was just young. These days it’s a STRUGGLE. But it does happen with consistentcy. Good luck!!
Hi Lisa,
I’m really enjoying your blog! The only reason I didn’t respond to the Mediterranean Diet blog is because I’ve been incorporating that style of eating for quite some time. I have to say I find it delicious, healthy and the more I have adhered to it, the more my weight stays within what is ideal for me. Personally though I don’t believe in “diets” just eating balanced meals. Not always ideal, especially when on vacation!😏That’s when I go off the rails anyway! And I love Spanx and NYDJ brands, too! Safe travels for your upcoming trip.
Thank you, Nancy! I’m glad it’s worked for you. I think it’s a very doable diet. I apprectiate you being here!
I love the high waisted pants! I also love the lady jackets and blazers. I can throw on a pair of high waisted pants, a fitted top, a transitional blazer, and out the door I go. I lay my bracelet stack on my purse and throw it on as I go out the door. Of course you taught me about bracelet stacking lol I am learning so much from your blog! A million times thank you!
Aww, thank you! I’m all about women sharing what works with others. xo
