The Cardigan Rules: 9 Styles Worth Owning This Fall

The cardigan is the hardest-working piece in a fall wardrobe. It goes over a tee on a mild afternoon, over a blouse for lunch out, and over a turtleneck when the temperature really drops. It comes off easily when a room is too warm, which is more than a coat or a pullover can say.
But “a cardigan” covers a lot of ground. A thin, shapeless one does very little for an outfit. The right one can stand in for a jacket, add color near the face, or make jeans and a tee look finished. These nine rules cover the styles that do the most work, starting with lighter layers for early fall and moving toward the cozier knits you’ll want by November.
Rule 1: Start the season with a lightweight layer
Late September rarely calls for a heavy sweater. Linen and cotton blends are breathable enough for warm afternoons and still take the edge off a cool morning or an air-conditioned restaurant.

The Maren Linen & Organic-Cotton Cardigan from Garnet Hill fits this moment. Shown here in a deep wine, it has a classic button front that works over a tee now and over a thin long-sleeve top later in the season.
Rule 2: When you want a jacket, choose a blazer sweater
A structured blazer can feel stiff for everyday wear. A blazer sweater gives you the same polished outline in a knit that moves with you.

The Lands’ End Women’s Fine Gauge Cotton Milano Blazer Sweater is made in a Milano knit, a dense, smooth knit that holds its shape better than a typical cardigan. That structure is what lets it read as a jacket. Wear it with dark jeans and loafers for errands, or over trousers for a meeting or a doctor’s appointment where you’d like to look put together without being dressed up. The camel shade shown works with navy, denim, black and cream.
Rule 3: Define your waist with the knit, not a belt
Many women skip belts after 60, for comfort or simply preference. A cardigan with a shaped waist gives the same effect without anything to buckle.

The Softluxe Ribbed Waist Cardigan at Nordstrom has a ribbed section at the waist that pulls in and then flares slightly below, which creates shape on its own. A V-neck and slightly flared cuffs finish it. Shown in a deep plum, it’s a rich fall color that’s softer than black. Wear it buttoned as a top with dark jeans or slim black pants.
Rule 4: A mock neck gives warmth without a turtleneck
Not everyone likes a full turtleneck. A mock neck sits higher than a crew neck but doesn’t fold over or cling to the throat.

The Merino-Cotton Mock Neck Cardigan from Banana Republic blends merino wool with cotton, so it has some of wool’s warmth while staying lighter than a full wool sweater. Buttoned all the way, it works as a sweater on its own. Shown in a soft cream, it pairs easily with jeans, as in the product photo, or with brown or camel trousers.
Rule 5: Own one zip-up for easy on, easy off
Buttons can be fiddly, especially on cold mornings. A full zip goes on in a second, and a zip-up tends to look sporty and polished at the same time.

The Cable Knit Full-Zip Cardigan from Talbots has a raised collar and classic cable knitting, which keeps it from looking like a sweatshirt. Shown here in a dark chocolate brown, (others available) it looks rich with dark denim and suede loafers, and it comes in other colors as well. Brown is an easy alternative to black for fall, since it’s softer against the face. Wear it zipped up as a sweater, or open over a tee.
Rule 6: If sleeves bother you, try a dolman
Fitted sleeves can bunch up over a blouse and feel tight in the upper arm. A dolman sleeve is cut wide from the body, so it drapes instead of hugging.

The Women’s Elbow Sleeve Dolman Zip-Up Cardigan at Macy’s combines that roomy sleeve with an elbow-length cut, which means it layers over a long-sleeve top without doubling up at the wrist. Shown in an oatmeal shade, it has a relaxed, cape-like drape. Keep the pieces underneath fitted and simple so the shape stands out.
Rule 7: Your cashmere cardigan should be a real color
If you’re investing in cashmere, consider a color you’ll notice every time you open the closet. Jewel tones worn near the face tend to brighten the complexion in a way neutrals can’t.

The Cashmere Mini Cable Cardigan from Nordstrom has a small cable pattern that adds texture without bulk, so it layers easily under a coat. Shown in a rich magenta, it looks sharp with dark denim and adds a lift to gray, navy and black. (Not sure which jewel tones suit you? Our color season quiz can help.)
Rule 8: Give a soft color some texture
Pale colors in a flat, thin knit can look washed out or a little too sweet. A textured stitch gives a soft shade more depth, so it reads as polished and grown-up.

The Haven Well Within Cashmere Shaker Stitch Cardigan at Loft has a shaker stitch, a ribbed knit with a visible, dimensional texture. Shown in a soft pink, it brings a warm glow near the face, and the cashmere keeps it soft. Pink is also easier to wear than many women expect. It works with gray, cream, camel and denim, and over a white tee it looks fresh rather than fussy.
Rule 9: Every closet needs one red cable knit
The red cable cardigan is a classic because it works from the first cold snap straight through the holidays. It’s cheerful without being trendy.

The cable-knit cardigan from L.L. Bean has an all-over cable pattern and a traditional button front. Shown in a deep red, it looks right with jeans and boots, over a plaid shirt, or with a gray skirt for a holiday gathering. It’s the kind of sweater that ends up worn for years.
The bottom line
You don’t need all nine. Start with the rule that solves your biggest wardrobe problem, whether that’s a jacket substitute, a warmer neckline, or sleeves that don’t bunch. The right cardigan should do more than keep you warm. It should make the rest of your outfit easier.
