Style Mistakes That Can Age You (And Easy Fixes)

Sometimes it’s not what we’re wearing that makes us look older, it’s how we’re wearing it. I’ve had those moments myself. You put on an outfit that technically “works,” but something feels a little dated. The good news? These are easy fixes. You don’t need a whole new wardrobe. Just a few small shifts can make a big difference.
Here are some of the most common style mistakes that can unintentionally age you and simple ways to fix them.

Wearing Clothes That Are Too Loose (or Too Tight)
When clothes are too loose, they can overwhelm your shape and make you look bigger, and older, than you are. On the flip side, clothes that are too tight tend to highlight areas we’d rather skim over.
The Fix: Look for pieces that gently follow your shape without clinging.
For example:
Choosing the Wrong Undergarments
This one matters more than most people realize.
The wrong bra or underwear can change the entire way your clothes fit. If your bra isn’t giving you support, your silhouette instantly looks less lifted. And visible lines from undergarments can make even a great outfit look messy.
The Fix: Invest in well-fitting, smoothing undergarments.
Look for:
- A supportive, comfortable bra
- Seamless underwear
This is one of those behind-the-scenes upgrades that makes everything look better.
Wearing Outdated Styles
We all have pieces we’ve held onto for years. And sometimes that’s perfectly fine; classic is always in style. But if your entire outfit looks like it came from a different decade, it can unintentionally age you.
The Fix: Mix one or two updated pieces into your outfit.
Try:
- A current sneaker style from New Balance
- A fresh blouse with updated sleeves or neckline
You don’t need to chase trends. Just stay slightly current.
Sticking Only to Dark Colors
Black is classic. Navy is safe. And yes, we all reach for them. But wearing dark colors from head to toe, especially near your face, can make your complexion look dull or tired.
The Fix: Add light, bright, or flattering colors near your face.
Soft colors like:
- Teal (always a favorite)
- Soft white or cream
- Blush or coral tones
A little color can instantly brighten your entire look.
Ignoring Proper Fit in Pants
Pants are tricky. Too long, and they drag you down visually. Too short (in the wrong way), and they can cut off your leg line. And ill-fitting waistbands can make everything feel uncomfortable.
The goal is what I call “easy structure.” Not baggy. Not tight. Just right.
The Fix: Pay attention to rise, length, and leg shape. A good fit here makes your whole outfit look polished.
Wearing Shoes That Feel Heavy
Shoes can make or break an outfit. Clunky, heavy shoes can visually “weigh down” your look even if the rest of your outfit is light and modern.
The Fix: Choose lighter, streamlined styles.
Comfort is still key, but lighter styles feel fresher.

Over-Accessorizing (or Not Accessorizing at All)
Accessories are meant to finish your outfit, not overwhelm it. Too many accessories can feel busy. But skipping them completely can leave your outfit feeling unfinished.
The Fix: Aim for balance.
A simple formula:
- One statement piece (necklace or earrings)
- One subtle piece (bracelet or watch)

Sometimes less really is more.
Wearing Fabrics That Feel Heavy or Stiff
Heavy fabrics can add bulk and make your outfit feel dated, especially in warmer months.
The Fix: Choose softer, more fluid fabrics.
Look for:
- Cotton blends
- Linen
- Lightweight knits
These fabrics move with you and feel much more modern.
Forgetting About Your Hairstyle and Makeup
Clothing gets all the attention, but your hair and makeup matter just as much. A dated hairstyle or heavy makeup can age you faster than anything in your closet.
The Fix: Keep things soft and fresh.
Think:
- Natural makeup that enhances (not covers)
- Softer hairstyles with movement
- Updated color that complements your skin tone
Even small tweaks here can take years off your look.
Holding Onto “Rules” That No Longer Serve You
This might be the biggest one of all.
“No white after Labor Day.”
“I can’t wear that at my age.”
“I should stick to what I’ve always worn.”
Those rules? They’re outdated.
The Fix: Wear what feels good on you now. Style should evolve with you. What worked at 40 may not feel right at 60 and that’s okay.
The goal isn’t to dress younger. It’s to dress in a way that feels current, comfortable, and confident.

Our AI models Roberta, Louise, and Margaret are 60, 70, and 80 years old, but there is nothing frumpy or dated about their style!
Looking stylish isn’t about chasing trends or buying more clothes. It’s about making small, thoughtful choices that help you feel like the best version of yourself. A better fit, lighter fabric, a fresh pair of shoes, etc. are little changes but they add up. You won’t just look more modern, you’ll feel more confident, too.
