The Most Popular Books on Goodreads This January

Every month, millions of readers on Goodreads add books to their personal shelves. It doesn’t go unnoticed! Goodreads tracks which new releases are being saved, marked “want to read,” and shared most often, creating a snapshot of what people are genuinely excited about.
January’s list is especially interesting. The start of a new year brings a desire for fresh stories, emotional depth, and page-turning distractions, and that shows clearly in this month’s most popular picks. Thrillers dominate the list, but there’s also room for thoughtful literary fiction, romance, fantasy, and darker psychological reads. Whether you’re looking for something immersive, comforting, or impossible to put down, these ten books reflect what readers everywhere are reaching for right now.
Below are the ten most popular books added to Goodreads shelves in January, along with a brief look at what makes each one stand out.
My Husband’s Wife by Alice Feeney
Alice Feeney has built a loyal following for her ability to twist a story until readers no longer trust what they think they know, and My Husband’s Wife continues that tradition. This psychological thriller explores marriage, identity, and betrayal, slowly peeling back layers of truth through shifting perspectives. The tension builds quietly but relentlessly, making it the kind of book that’s easy to sink into for long reading sessions. Readers who enjoy suspense with emotional complexity will find this one especially gripping.
The New York Times bestselling Queen of Twists is back with a psychological masterpiece that will leave you questioning everything you know about love, identity, and revenge.
Eden Fox, an artist on the brink of her big break, sets off for a run before her first exhibition. When she returns to the home she recently moved into, Spyglass, an enchanting old house in Hope Falls, nothing is as it should be. Her key doesn’t fit. A woman, eerily similar to her, answers the door. And her husband insists that the stranger is his wife.
One house. One husband. Two women. Someone is lying.
Six months earlier, a reclusive Londoner called Birdy, reeling from a life-changing diagnosis, inherits Spyglass. This unexpected gift from a long-lost grandmother brings her to the pretty seaside village of Hope Falls. But then Birdy stumbles upon a shadowy London clinic that claims to be able to predict a person’s date of death, including her own. Secrets start to unravel, and as the line between truth and lies blurs, Birdy feels compelled to right some old wrongs.
Dear Debbie by Freida McFadden
Fast, sharp, and highly addictive, Dear Debbie delivers exactly what Freida McFadden fans expect: unexpected twists and a story that keeps escalating. Known for her ability to hook readers quickly, McFadden crafts a thriller that feels both entertaining and unsettling. This is a great choice for readers who like shorter chapters, strong pacing, and stories that make it hard to stop “just one more chapter” from turning into half the book.
Sometimes, enough is enough…
Debbie Mullen is losing it. For years, she has compiled all of her best advice into her column, Dear Debbie, where the wives of New England come for sympathy and neighborly advice. Through her work, Debbie has heard from countless women who are ignored, belittled, or even abused by their husbands. And Debbie does her best to guide them in the right direction. Or at least, she did.
These days, Debbie’s life seems to be spiraling out of control. She just lost her job. Something strange is happening with her teenage daughters. And her husband is keeping secrets, according to the tracking app she installed on his phone. Now, Debbie’s done being the bigger person.
She’s done being reasonable and practical. It’s time to take her own advice.
And now it’s time for payback against all the people in her life who deserve it the most.
Anatomy of an Alibi by Ashley Elston
This suspenseful novel centers on two women connected by a complicated past, brought together again when a murder forces old secrets into the open. Anatomy of an Alibi blends emotional tension with a steadily unfolding mystery, offering more depth than a typical whodunit. Ashley Elston balances character development with intrigue, making this a strong pick for readers who want a mystery that also explores relationships and long-buried truths.
Two women. One dead husband. And only one alibi.
“Elston expertly unravels a web of secrets and lies. You won’t be able to put this excellent thriller down until the final shocking page.” —Megan Miranda
Everyone at Chantilly’s Bar noticed out-of-towner Camille Bayliss. Red lips, designer heels, sipping a Negroni. But that woman wasn’t Camille Bayliss. It was Aubrey Price.
Camille Bayliss appears to have the picture-perfect life; she’s married to hotshot lawyer Ben and is the daughter of a wealthy Louisiana family. Only nothing is as it seems: Camille believes Ben has been hiding dirty secrets for years, but she can’t find proof because he tracks her every move.
Aubrey Price has been haunted by the terrible night that changed her life a decade ago, and she’s convinced Benjamin Bayliss knows something about it. Living in a house full of criminals, Aubrey understands there’s more than one way to get to the truth—and she may have found the best way in.
Aubrey and Camille hatch a plan. It sounds simple: For twelve hours, Aubrey will take Camille’s place. Camille will spy on Ben, and the two women will get the answers they desperately seek.
Half His Age by Jennette McCurdy
Provocative and thought-provoking, Half His Age examines power dynamics, desire, and loneliness in modern relationships. Jennette McCurdy writes with honesty and sharp insight, tackling uncomfortable topics without softening their impact. This novel has sparked conversation among readers for its unflinching look at age gaps, identity, and emotional vulnerability. It’s a compelling choice for readers who enjoy books that linger in the mind long after the last page.
From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of I’m Glad My Mom Died comes a sad, funny, thrilling novel about sex, consumerism, class, desire, loneliness, the internet, rage, intimacy, power, and the (oftentimes misguided) lengths we’ll go to in order to get what we want.
Waldo is ravenous. Horny. Blunt. Naive. Wise. Impulsive. Lonely. Angry. Forceful. Hurting. Perceptive. Endlessly wanting. And the thing she wants most of all: Mr. Korgy, her creative writing teacher with the wife and the kid and the mortgage and the bills, with the dead dreams and the atrophied looks and the growing paunch. She doesn’t know why she wants him. Is it his passion? His life experience? The fact that he knows books and films and things that she doesn’t? Or is it purer than that, rooted in their unlikely connection, their kindred spirits, the similar filter with which they each take in the world around them? Or, perhaps, it’s just enough that he sees her when no one else does.
Startlingly perceptive, mordantly funny, and keenly poignant, Half His Age is a rich character study of a yearning seventeen-year-old who disregards all obstacles—or attempts to overcome them—in her effort to be seen, to be desired, to be loved.
The First Time I Saw Him by Laura Dave
As the sequel to The Last Thing He Told Me, this novel continues the story with the same emotional pull that made the original so popular. Laura Dave excels at blending suspense with heartfelt storytelling, and this follow-up deepens the themes of trust, love, and family. The Storm by Rachel Hawkins
Set against the backdrop of an approaching storm, this atmospheric mystery uses its setting to heighten suspense and unease. Rachel Hawkins creates a sense of isolation and urgency that mirrors the emotional tension of the story itself. The pacing builds steadily, making this an excellent winter read for those who enjoy mysteries that rely as much on mood and environment as on plot twists.
St. Medard’s Bay, Alabama is famous for three things: the deadly hurricanes that regularly sweep into town, the Rosalie Inn, a century-old hotel that’s survived every one of those storms, and Lo Bailey, the local girl infamously accused of the murder of her lover, political scion Landon Fitzroy, during Hurricane Marie in 1984.
When Geneva Corliss, the current owner of the Rosalie Inn, hears a writer is coming to town to research the crime that put St. Medard’s Bay on the map, she’s less interested in solving a whodunnit than in how a successful true crime book might help the struggling inn’s bottom line. But to her surprise, August Fletcher doesn’t come to St. Medard’s Bay alone. With him is none other than Lo Bailey herself. Lo says she’s returned to her hometown to clear her name once and for all, but the closer Geneva gets to both Lo and August, the more she wonders if Lo is actually back to settle old scores.
As the summer heats up and another monster storm begins twisting its way towards St. Medard’s Bay, Geneva learns that some people can be just as destructive—and as deadly—as any hurricane, and that the truth of what happened to Landon Fitzroy may not be the only secret Lo is keeping…

When Rune’s magic reveals itself to be the rarest and most powerful, she must live with its only other wielder—Prince Draven. As arrogant as he is ruthlessly ambitious, he’s the last person she can trust.
Rune’s abilities also draw the eyes of the most dangerous druids in the realms. Some want to use her. More want her dead. Draven offers to train her . . . for a price. As Rune becomes ensnared in Draven’s dangerous games, she learns there are secrets at the heart of the kingdom that some will kill to protect.
And Rune and Draven’s growing attraction may be the spark to ignite a brewing war.
Woman Down by Colleen Hoover
Known primarily for emotional contemporary fiction, Colleen Hoover shifts into thriller territory with Woman Down. The novel combines psychological suspense with deeply personal themes, creating a story that feels both tense and emotionally raw. Fans of Hoover’s previous work may be surprised by the darker tone, while new readers may appreciate the balance of intensity and character-driven storytelling.
In this twisty thriller from New York Times bestselling author Colleen Hoover, a frustrated author looks for her muse in a remote hideaway, but what she finds defies all expectations…and reality.
Her words used to set the page on fire. But a viral backlash over her latest film adaptation forced Petra Rose to take a hiatus, resulting in missed deadlines and an overdue mortgage. Branded a fraud and fame-hungry opportunist, she learned the hard way what happens when the internet turns on you. And she’s been uninspired to write ever since.
Now, with her next suspense novel outlined and savings nearly gone, she retreats to a secluded lakeside cabin, hoping to find inspiration. It’s Petra’s last-ditch attempt to save her career—and herself.
Then he shows up.
Detective Nathaniel Saint arrives with disturbing news, his presence igniting a creativity in her she thought long since burned out. Petra’s words return in a rush, and her fictional cop character begins to mirror the very real cop who’s becoming her muse.
Their “research” sessions blur the lines between fantasy and reality. Each glance, every touch pulls Petra deeper into a world she thought she’d never lose herself in again. She’s never felt more alive. But inspiration this powerful comes at a cost.
When Saint starts taking his role in her career a little too seriously, Petra’s forced to confront the chaos she created. But doing so could cost her more than the reputation she’s been trying to salvage. The reputation the world wrote for her—the reputation only she can reclaim.
Hollow by Celina Myers

Dark, unsettling, and atmospheric, Hollow leans into psychological horror rather than shock alone. Celina Myers creates an eerie reading experience that slowly creeps under the skin, making it ideal for readers who enjoy suspense with a gothic edge. This is a good pick for those who want something different from the usual thriller, especially during long winter evenings.
“Brilliant new vampire lore…. Spine-tingling!”
—L.J. Smith, #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Vampire Diaries
From TikTok sensation Celina Myers comes a fresh, intriguing novel about a woman who finds her destiny and her family after being turned into a vampire.
Mia Adair isn’t even twenty-five yet, but she’s starting to wonder if her peak has already passed. She’s spent years working at her local bookstore, a job that was supposed to be temporary. As a kid, she experienced a strange sort of fame within the paranormal community thanks to her inclusion in a book that revealed Mia’s ability to talk with the dead. But that was then, and Mia’s “gift” dried up once adolescence set in. These days, she feels like she’s nobody special.
Until she dies in a tragic car crash and reawakens as a vampire…
Forced to leave behind everything she knew, Mia must choose to live with one of two rival vampire families. The Bellamy and Sutton clans share a dark, complicated history that spans centuries. And as she feels her gift returning, more potent than ever before, Mia realizes she’ll need it to protect innocent lives—and save the only family she has left.
The Future Saints by Ashley Winstead
(Releases January 20, 2026) The Future Saints rounds out January’s list with a more literary and emotionally layered story. Centered on ambition, creativity, and complicated relationships, this novel explores what it means to chase dreams while navigating real-world consequences. Ashley Winstead’s writing is thoughtful and immersive. This is a strong choice for readers who enjoy character-driven fiction with depth and atmosphere.
A most anticipated book from Goodreads, Woman’s World, Brit + Co, and more!
For fans of Daisy Jones and the Six and In Five Years—a powerful, and transportive new novel about a music executive desperately trying to bring a rock band back from the brink, from bestselling author Ashley Winstead.
The best love stories are the ones you don’t expect.
When record executive Theo meets the Future Saints, they’re bombing at a dive bar in their hometown. Since the tragic death of their manager, the band has been in a downward spiral and Theo has been dispatched to coax a new, and successful, album out of them, or else let them go.
Immediately, Theo is struck by Hannah, the group’s impetuous lead singer, who’s gone off script by debuting a whole new sound, replacing their California pop with gut-wrenching rock. When this new music goes viral, striking an unexpected chord with fans, Theo puts his career on the line to give the Saints one last shot at success with a new tour, new record, and new start.
But Hannah’s grief has larger consequences for the group, and her increasingly destructive antics become a distraction as she and her sister Ginny—her lifelong partner in crime—undermine Theo at every turn. Hannah isn’t ready to move on or prepared for the fame she’s been chasing, and the weight of her problems jeopardize the band, her growing closeness with Theo, and, worst of all, her relationship with her sister, all while the world watches closely. The Future Saints’s big break is here if only they can survive it.
A novel about sisterhood, friendship, and the ghosts that haunt us, The Future Saints is “a mesmerizing look at grief, love, and the music industry that’s so raw and emotional, you’ll want to play it on repeat” (Laura Hankin, author of One-Star Romance).
The Last Word

From fast-paced thrillers to reflective literary fiction, this list offers something for nearly every reading preference. If you’re looking for a book worth your time, these ten titles reflect what readers are excited about right now.
As the year unfolds, it will be interesting to see which of these stories continue to gain momentum. Living Well With Seniors is adding this as a monthly series, so check back in February!

Thank you for all the book recommendations. I reserved a few of them at my local library and look forward to when I can start reading them.
Yay! I love how many readers are in the Living Well community. Let me know which ones you love!
So many good book recommendations! Also adding some of them to my TBR list. A book that I read last year was Queen of the Road by Heidi Heath Tony. Very different, but enjoyable. In a nutshell, a Martha Stewart type woman starts a new career as a long haul truck driver after her husband leaves her. Really enjoying your blog.
I’m adding it to mine, too! Thank you for reading. 🙂 https://amzn.to/44ZXf9i
Hi Lisa,
“Calling Invisible Women” by Jeanne Ray was a really fun read for me. It’s fiction and the main character is a woman in her early 50’s. I’ve never read anything quite like it and I’m a very avid reader.
I can’t wait to try it! It sounds amazing! https://amzn.to/49mUTTb
I’ve read and loved all of Jeanne’s books! Just sorry she started her career late in life and has stopped writing.
Lisa, These sound like some great reads. Thanks for sharing this.
Thank you! I’m glad you’re here. 🙂
My goodness, I’m going to have to live forever to read all the books on my TBR list!! It just keeps growing!!
Haha. Same!
I’m not a fan of mystery/suspense but I do love Goodreads. I track books I want to read and books I’ve read – and set reading goals for the year. Goodreads also notifies you of giveaways in your TBR pile or authors read in the past. To date I’ve only rated books with the stars – maybe this is the year to actually write a review too as I do depend on the written reviews when I select a book to go in the TBR pile! I do enjoy your blog and the variety of topics!
Thanks, Laura! As an author, we REALLY appreciate reviews. Well, the good ones anyway. 🙂
